tips & tricks for staying safe in the big city

Introduction

Welcome to Urban Journal! A little bit of an introduction is in order before we get started. My name is Jason DeFillippo and my co-editor is Sean Bonner. We’re a couple of city dwelling guys who have a passion for all things related to preparedness and survivalism in urban settings. We both live in the greater Los Angeles area which is home to a plague of possible disasters from riots to earthquakes to tsunamis and the list goes on. So with an eye to things going sideways we’re starting this site to share our knowledge and experiences as we go. We’re not claiming to be survival experts. We have a deep passion for this stuff and we’re meeting more and more people every day who share it. Learning how to be ready in case something happens that’s out of our control is becoming more and more important as more people are living in cities and as we lose more of the core skills it takes to get by and our reliance on the infrastructure of civilization increases. With that in mind we are also launching a forum where we can all discuss various tips and techniques and learn from each other and build a community of like minded people.

On that note, why are we starting yet another “survivalist” website you might be asking yourself (we did) when there are thousands of them already out there? If you’ve spent any time at all browsing the current offerings you’ve probably noticed that they’re up to their eyeballs in political and religious rhetoric that takes away from their stated purpose. We aim to be different. Just giving you the skinny on the best ways to keep your ass out of trouble and still breathing while leaving your own beliefs and all that other crap firmly out of it.

So with all that out of the way lets get this show on the road!

Interesting content here… I’ll look forward to what this “survivalist” website offers that is truly different. As you said, please… keep the political and religious diatribes out of it and stick to the message: Be safe… here’s how.

That’s 100% of our goal. Seriously. No religion. No politics. Just tips and tricks.

Have you guys read Neil Strauss’s Emergency?
(http://www.neilstrauss.com/emergency/)

He takes what might be a comparable journey.

This is just the blog I needed as a follow-up to that;
Cool Tools for the Comptetent Man!

Interesting blog. I actually just finished the book “Emergency” myself.

In the meantime, I have to ask… If you guys are from Los Angeles, what’s with the Chicago skyline throughout the site?

Being in Chicago myself, I like the choice anyway.

Came with the theme but I spent 10 years in Chicago and Sean spent some time there. If the winters weren’t such hell it’d be my favorite city in the US :-)
